The nature reserve that is located nearest to the original Tense Towers in Milton Keynes is Hanson Environmental Study Centre (HESC). This is an old gravel pit that has been turned into an area of lakes and ponds. It is currently leased from Hanson by the local council and is used primarily as an educational resource as part of the Forest Schools scheme.

The site is also open to permit holders who can follow a broad range of Natural History pursuits. But, yeah, it's mainly birders.

There is an active Friends group (FoHESC) who work hard to maintain the habitat and raise funds for the upkeep of the reserve. Their blog site can be accessed through the embedded link in the I&T sidebar (top right).
